Gear Up, Throttle Down

This common phrase applies whenever your tractor’s full power isn’t necessary. Essentially, it means that if the task at hand needs less than 70% of your tractor’s power, you’ll shift into a higher gear and slow the engine speed. This will increase your efficiency and prevent your tractor from overworking on a simple job.

Minimize Idle Time

When your tractor is idling, you’re losing fuel for nothing, which means you’re losing money for nothing. It also keeps your systems working and wearing out without any payoff. When you’re trying to circulate oil, you should only need about five minutes of idle time. If it’ll be sitting around for more than five to ten minutes, it’s better to just turn it off.

Strategize Your Working Hours

If your schedule has some flexibility, try to take advantage of it. Using your tractor at cooler times of the day like early morning or late evening can improve its performance. Cooler temperatures won’t use up fuel as quickly, and in general it won’t have to work as hard.

Tire Care

Your tractor tires are probably jacks of all trades, able to handle just a bit of everything. If it’s only used on certain terrains, though, consider getting specialized tires installed. You can also invest in radial tractor tires, which have a bigger footprint. That reduces wheel slip and compaction, both, improving your tractor’s performance and minimizing its impact on the ground it rolls over.

Whatever tires you’ve got, make sure to keep a close eye on the tire pressure and tread level. Over-inflated tires can decrease traction, but under-inflated tires decrease efficiency and will wear out faster. And if your tread gets too low before you replace the tires, you’ll again lose out on traction. All of these outcomes make your engine work harder for the same amount of work.

Other Maintenance

A few other regular maintenance tasks can make a big difference. Clean radiator screens and filters regularly to avoid gunking up any processes, and make sure your fuel injectors stay clean. Even just using recommended or premium products can help your machine run smoother, so check your owner’s manual for product recommendations.
